Turkish authorities detained 97 students at Istanbul’s Bogazici University on Tuesday during a protest against a controversial conference featuring Islamic preacher Nureddin Yildiz, known for his contentious stance on early marriage. The demonstration turned confrontational when protesters attempted to breach police barricades, resulting in injuries to 13 officers who fell into a 5-meter construction pit during the clashes.

The Bogazici University protest came about over a scheduled talk by Yildiz, organized by a student club at the prestigious institution. Demonstrators objected to the preacher’s appearance due to his polarizing views on social issues, including advocacy for child marriages in Turkey. Istanbul Governor Davut Gul confirmed the mass detentions, characterizing the student actions as unlawful attempts to disrupt a permitted campus event.

This incident makes it the latest in a series of university protests in Turkey targeting perceived government overreach into academic affairs. Bogazici University has become a focal point for student activism, with regular demonstrations against policies seen as eroding academic freedom in Turkey. The arrests come amid heightened political tensions following the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a prominent rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Injuries and Reaction From the Campus Confrontation

The violent scuffles resulted in multiple injuries when police officers plunged into an open construction area during the melee. While authorities emphasized maintaining public order, human rights groups condemned the police crackdown on student protesters, raising concerns about freedom of assembly in Turkish universities. The detained students face potential charges related to unlawful assembly and resisting authorities.

Why It Matters

Bogazici University demonstrations have become a sort of representative of growing student resistance against what activists describe as increasing government interference in Turkish education.

The prestigious institution has witnessed frequent clashes since 2021, when Erdogan’s appointment of a conservative rector sparked ongoing campus protests in Istanbul. Analysts note these events reflect deeper societal divisions over the role of religion in public life and academic institutions.

This latest arrests show the Erdogan government’s strict approach to dissent, particularly concerning student activism in Turkey.
