Turkey’s National Intelligence Agency, headed by Ibrahim Kalin, has engaged in talks with a delegation from the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Ankara, according to state broadcaster TRT on Friday. The discussions focused on the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza, TRT Haber reported, citing unnamed Turkish security sources. The identities of the delegation members from Hamas’ political bureau leadership were not disclosed.
Turkey’s Position on the Gaza Conflict
Turkey has been vocal in its condemnation of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The conflict erupted on October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of approximately 250 hostages, as reported by Israeli authorities. In retaliation, Israel has carried out a heavy assault on Gaza, with the enclave’s health ministry stating that more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed.
Turkey’s Diplomatic Efforts for Ceasefire
TRT further revealed that Turkey’s intelligence agency has been engaging with multiple key players in the conflict, including Hamas, Israel, Qatar, and the United States. Turkey is reportedly conducting intensive diplomatic efforts aimed at brokering a ceasefire in the region.
