A double tragedy has struck Jigawa State, plunging Governor Umar Namadi into deep mourning. Within a mere 24 hours, the governor has faced the devastating loss of both his mother and his eldest son.
Just as the governor was battling with the grief of his mother, Maryam Namadi’s passing after a brief illness on Wednesday, news broke of a fatal car accident involving his 24-year-old son, Abdulwahab. The accident reportedly occurred on Thursday along the Dutse-Kafin Hausa Road. Reports suggest Abdulwahab was traveling with friends from Kafin Hausa back to Dutse when the vehicle he was driving reportedly lost control, resulting in a devastating crash.
While details remain somewhat sketchy, it’s understood that some of Abdulwahab’s companions are currently receiving medical treatment at Dutse General Hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet publicly known.
The timing of these two bereavements is particularly confusing. The loss of a parent is a universally recognized source of profound sorrow, but to then lose a child so soon after adds an almost unbearable weight to the governor’s burden. Some persons are even questioning whether there are deeper, perhaps spiritual, implications behind this double loss.
The governor’s spokesperson confirmed the tragic news, stating that Abdulwahab passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024, due to a “ghastly motor accident” on the Dutse-Kafin-Hausa Road. The statement also confirmed that burial rites were being conducted in Kafin Hausa town, following Islamic traditions. The swiftness of the burial, in accordance with religious customs, has meant that the community has had little time to process the shock before the solemn ceremonies began.
He is survived by his parents, Governor Umar Namadi and his wife, and his siblings. The outpouring of condolences from across Jigawa State reflects the deep impact of this tragedy. Many residents have expressed their sympathy and support for the governor and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
