Two students of the Lagos State University (LASU) were by stray bullets, just outside the school campus at a well-known students’ residential area called PPL, on Monday night.

While the names of the students shot, and the perpetrators are still to be revealed, it was reported that the victims were hit when they went to buy food at about 8pm.

An X user, Baddy of Lasu, had posted on the platform: “Two students have been shot at PPL, Ojo, Lagos. Please, students of LASU, stay indoors and don’t go out.”

In reaction to the post, Kappo Olawale, the Senior Special Adviser on Students’ Union Affairs to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed the incident, saying that he had been in touch with the university’s Student Union President, who said the victims were in stable condition.

A screenshot from a video posted on X revealed one of the victims, a female, lying on a bed with her shirt covered in blood.

What They’re Saying:

Kappo Olawale had posted on C: “I have kept in touch with the President of the Student Union. Information passed just now is that the students are now stabilised. The Dean of Students was also on the ground to ensure they were properly attended to. Thanks to God!”

Additionally, a student of the university who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity had said that the gunshot victims had gone to to get food before they were hit by the stray bullets.

“It happened around past 8 pm at PPL. They went to get food outside, so they heard gunshots, and they ran away. When they got home, they observed that the bullets had hit the male on the neck and arm.

“Due to the bleeding, he was rushed to the LASU Health Centre from where he was rushed again to the Igando Medical Hospital. He’s already responding to treatment,” the anonymous student said.

The source also added that the Dean of Students Affairs of the school had gone to check on the students at the hospital.

Why it Matters

The shooting of two LASU students near their campus highlights the urgent need for better security around universities. It shows that students are vulnerable even in seemingly safe areas, and authorities must improve protection and emergency responses. Such incidents create fear and disrupt students’ lives, affecting their studies and mental health. While the officials’ response is reassuring, ongoing efforts are needed to ensure student safety from violence and crime.

Bottom Line

The shooting of two LASU students near their campus spotlights the critical need for improved security measures to protect students and ensure their safety in and around educational institutions.
