Following in the footsteps of record-breaking success in 2024 for most streamed album by a black female artist is none other than South African singer Tyla. Her self-titled debut album gathered an incredible 1.565 billion streams on Spotify, ousting Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, which came in at 1.564 billion.
The lead single, Water, played a huge role in this success, racking up nearly a billion streams and taking home the first-ever Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammys. Despite the groundbreaker her album had achieved, Tyla’s album and its deluxe version surprisingly were snubbed in the recently announced 67th Grammy nominations.
Tyla doesn’t stop there: with 20 accolades across international and local platforms, including a Grammy, BET Awards, MTV EMAs, and South African Music Awards, she remains the most awarded African artist of the year. She’s not just breaking records; she’s setting a new global standard for African music.
