UEFA warns FIFA over failed World Cup sell-off

UEFA has announced that it has dispatched a formal preservation letter to FIFA as pressure mounts on the world football governing body, after Gianni Infantino’s abortive plans to sell part of the World Cup revenues to private investors crumbled.

The European governing body confirmed that the notice of legal action has been filed at FIFA and mandates the organization to retain any and all documentation, electronic mails and communications that will be used as evidence during any potential litigation.

This follows the withdrawal of plans to launch a commercial enterprise, dubbed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), tasked with overseeing FIFA’s tournaments whilst securing $4.2bn in investment capital, including from a company owned by Joshua Kushner. Both UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation vociferously objected to the proposals before they were ultimately taken off the table this past weekend.

Reports also have it that UEFA is exploring options ranging from legal action, arbitration and even regulatory complaints, in relation to the proposition. The notice, which is reportedly from New York law firm Dechert, is said to have contained instructions to FIFA not to discard or alter any material associated with the proposed project.

The notice also apparently lists 18 senior officials of FIFA, including, among others, Infantino, Chief Finance Officer Thomas Peyer, and FIFA Head of Global Football Development Arsene Wenger. Wenger has stated his unawareness of the Investment project.

The issue further escalates the troubles of Infantino, with UEFA said to be looking for an alternative candidate for the FIFA presidency slated for March 2027. A string of UEFA member football federations have already withdrawn support for the Swiss Administrator.

Meanwhile, with the support of the Confederation of African Football and South America’s CONMEBOL, Infantino continues to face pressure from a growing number of soccer entities due to the mismanagement and questionable future outlook of FIFA.
