Mike Lynch, a British technology tycoon, and his 18-year-old daughter are among the six individuals missing after a luxury yacht collapsed off the coast of Sicily, Italy, early Monday morning.
The 56-meter (183-foot) sailboat was carrying 22 individuals, including British, American, and Canadian nationals.
Fifteen people have been rescued, including a one-year-old British girl, and authorities are continuing their search into the night.According to local media, the yacht, named Bayesian, collapsed at around 05:00 local time after experiencing a violent storm overnight, which caused waterspouts, or whirling columns of air, to appear over the sea.
Mr Lynch, known as “the British Bill Gates,” co-founded software startup Autonomy, which was ultimately acquired by computer behemoth Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion (£8.6 billion).
Witnesses informed Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm hit, causing the mast to break, the ship to lose balance, and sink off the coast of Porticello, near Sicily’s capital Palermo.

Searchers for the missing are looking for wreckage that they have located 50 meters below the surface of the water.
Salvatore Cocina, the director general of Sicily’s civil protection organisation, told the BBC that Mr. Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch, and the cook on the yacht were among those who went missing. He claimed that crews from rescue diving and caving would stay up all night in search efforts.
The body of one man was discovered outside the wreckage. His nationality has not been established.
