False lashes or eyelashes have been a thing for quite a couple of years now. What initially began as an eyebrow-raising trend has grown to be acceptable in Nigerian society.
What Are False Lashes?
Wikipedia describes false lashes as a cosmetic enhancement attaching synthetic or natural fibers to the eyelids to give the natural eyelashes a fuller and dramatic look.
Originally meant to be worn as an add-on to a fully made-up face, as a way of enhancing the eyes, false lashes have come a long way.
False lashes are usually made of four materials: Synthetic, Silk, Mink, and Human hair.
Synthetic Lashes
These lashes are made from nylon, polyester and acrylic fibers and are typically the cheapest lashes you’ll find in the market.
Silk Lashes
These are made from synthetic silk fiber and are very lightweight and durable.
Mink Lashes
Mink lashes are produced from the soft fur of Minks. If you’re concerned about animal cruelty, it’s best to skip lashes made from this material.
Human Hair Lashes
Like the name implies, this lash is made from real human hair and it is very lightweight as well as comfortable to wear. Unsurprisingly, it can be reworn multiple times if properly cared for.
The most common types of false lashes are:
1. Individual Lash Sets:
If you’re looking for a subtle, yet fuller and lengthier lash, this is your go-to lash type. These are great for creating a customizable look as you have control over the volume.
2. Flares, Accents or Cluster Lash Sets:
These are easily customizable as the individual sets, the only difference is that they are more easily applicable (if you’re inexperienced) than individual sets.
3. Strip Lash Sets:
This set is arguably, the most popular false lash in the market. Unlike the previous two examples above, this lash covers the entirety of your upper lash line.
4. Magnetic Lash Sets:
If you hate using lash glue and are rightfully afraid of what it does to your natural lashes, this is the false lash for you. Magnetic lashes work by the help of tiny magnets which attach in two layers above and below your upper lashes.
What Are Lash Extensions?
Lash extensions are semi-permanent lashes applied by a lash-technician and are hand-glued to the top of your natural lashes.
Unlike false lashes, lash extensions are glued on individually to your natural lashes, making them look more realistic than its counterpart and are perfect for those looking for full, long lashes without the added hassle of applying false lashes or mascara. Lash extensions usually last for about 4-8 weeks and have a strict maintenance regimen.
NOTE: Lash extensions are NOT to be confused with strip lashes.
The most popular lash extensions are:
1. Classic Lashes
Classics lash extensions are usually medium thick and involve placing one extension to each natural lash. This lash extension is usually subtle and tends to imitate the natural lash.
2. Volume Lashes
Volume lash extensions are much thicker than the classic set and it involves attaching multiple extensions to a single natural lash creating the effect of a more voluminous look.
3. Mega Volume Lashes
This lash extension is achieved by placing several extensions on top of each natural lash. It is more dramatic and intense than volume lashes.
4. Hybrid Lashes
This is a combination of both the classic and volume lash set to create a textured, multi-dimensional appearance.
The Pros and Cons for Both
- Cost: False lashes are a much cheaper alternative to lash extensions.
- Appearance: False lashes are always visible, especially on bare face while for lash extensions, the lashes are placed on the lash line making them seem more natural.
- Longevity: False lashes are not durable whereas lash extensions can last up to two months if managed properly.
- Risks: False lashes pose minimal risks unlike lash extensions where you can contract eye infection if your lash-technician doesn’t practice good hygiene. Additionally, some individuals can be allergic to the strong glue used to fix the extensions.
Conclusion
Both false lashes and lash extensions are great ways to enhance your eyes and make them stand out.
If you like switching up your look regularly, false lashes are your best bet.
However, if you hate stress and dread the thought of accidentally ripping off your natural lashes, lash extensions will do the trick for you, just make sure to hold enough cash though, they don’t come cheap.
