The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has officially shut down its hostels, ordering an immediate evacuation of all students as the security situation in Plateau State takes a terrifying turn. The decision comes after “near chaotic scenarios” erupted near the campus, signaling that terrorists and armed hoodlums are closing in on the university community.

Immediate Evacuation Ordered by UNIJOS Management

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, directed that the hostels be emptied to prevent a potential massacre. The Plateau crisis reached a breaking point on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, forcing the institution to prioritize student lives over academic schedules.

According to a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Emmanuel Madugu, the safety of students in the hostels was no longer guaranteed due to the heightened tensions and violence unfolding in areas surrounding the university.

Governor Mutfwang Intervenes Amidst Curfew

To ensure the safe passage of the students, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has deployed state-provided transportation. These vehicles have been authorized to operate even within curfew hours to move students out of the danger zone.

The evacuation

Those residing within Jos and its environs were ordered to vacate by 3:00 pm on Wednesday. Students whose parents live outside Plateau State are scheduled for evacuation starting at 8:00 am on Thursday.

The Angwan Rukuba Massacre

The current panic follows a deadly attack on the Angwan Rukuba community, where several lives were reportedly lost. While the state government initially imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, the relaxation of these restrictions on Wednesday morning backfired.

Reports indicate that hoodlums took advantage of the eased curfew to launch fresh attacks on motorists and residents, leading to the “near chaotic” environment that forced the UNIJOS shutdown.

Security Alert: Is Jos Safe?

While the university management claims adequate security has been deployed to protect the empty campus, the atmosphere remains tense. The Plateau State security apparatus is currently struggling to contain the surge in violence as residents live in fear of the next move by bandits and terrorists operating in the region.

The University of Jos evacuation is a sad reminder of the fragile peace in the North-Central region. Students and parents are urged to stay tuned to official channels for further updates as the “2027 election frenzy” continues to distract the nation’s political class from the escalating insecurity in Nigeria.
