The University of Ibadan in Oyo State has issued a stark warning regarding the increasing number of its female students resorting to egg donation as a means to earn money.

While acknowledging that egg donation offers a path to parenthood for individuals and couples facing infertility, the University Health Service has emphatically stated that it should not be viewed as a reliable income source or a casual “side hustle” for students due to significant health risks of egg donation.

Reports from SaharaReporters have shown the medical procedures involved in human egg donation, which necessitate the use of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries.

This process, while crucial for successful egg retrieval, carries considerable health risks for egg donors. The University Health Service detailed potential complications, including abdominal pain, breast tenderness, bloating, and mood swings.

More alarmingly, they cautioned that severe egg donation side effects can include the potentially life-threatening Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).

The university memo further elaborated on the grave physical dangers associated with egg donation procedures, noting the possibility of infections, bleeding, and ovarian torsion. There is also a risk of inadvertent injury to internal organs such as the bladder and bowel during the egg retrieval process.

Beyond the physical toll, the University of Ibadan emphasized the significant psychological distress of egg donation, which should not be underestimated by students considering this option for financial gain.

Dr. Ajayi’s Urgent Plea: “Prioritize Health Over Financial Incentives”

Dr. Aderonke Ajayi, the Director of the University Health Service at the University of Ibadan, issued a compelling memo on April 15, streesing on the the critical importance of prioritizing health above short-term financial rewards.

Her message, “health implications of egg donation”, was clear: “It is crucial that our students understand the health implications and long-term consequences of egg donation.”

This statement highlights the university’s commitment to the well-being of its students and their concern over the potential for exploitation.

University Advises Caution and Reputable Clinics for Egg Donation

Acknowledging that some students may still choose to pursue egg donation despite the risks, the University of Ibadan advised them to exercise extreme caution.

They urged students to select only reputable egg donation clinics that strictly adhere to medical guidelines and prioritize the safety and well-being of donors.

This caveat showed the university’s pragmatic approach while still stressing the inherent dangers associated with the procedure.
