The United States Secret Service has commenced an investigation into a shooting that occurred in Washington, D.C., during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton.

In a statement, the agency confirmed it is collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident, which took place near a security screening point.

The shooting reportedly happened close to the main magnetometer checkpoint where guests were being screened, triggering a swift response from security personnel and law enforcement officers at the scene.

Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, disclosed via the agency’s X handle on Sunday that all individuals under protection, including the president and first lady, were unharmed.

Authorities have taken one suspect into custody, while investigations continue and officials assess the condition of those affected.

“We will provide updates as they become available and confirm information. Our teams are on the ground assessing the situation and investigating. All of our protectees are safe,” he said.

The development has sparked renewed concerns about security arrangements at high-profile events in the US capital, with expectations that safety protocols will be reviewed as the investigation progresses.
