The U.S. Senate just gave the green light to a whopping $895 billion defense bill, setting the stage for it to land on President Biden’s desk soon. This bill, known as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), isn’t just about military spending—it’s a massive policy package that shapes the Pentagon’s future moves.

The Full Story

The Senate voted 83-12 to advance the bill, which includes a hotly debated provision that restricts gender-affirming care for transgender children of service members. Despite the controversy, the bill is cruising towards final approval.

What’s in the bill?

There’s a lot! Think 14.5% pay raise for the lowest-ranking troops, new military housing, schools, and childcare centers. Plus, it aims to boost the U.S. military’s edge against rivals like China and Russia. The bill also includes funding for advanced weapons systems, cybersecurity enhancements, and initiatives to strengthen alliances with key partners around the globe.

Not everyone is happy though. Some Democrats are have expressed annoyance over the transgender care provision, arguing it plays politics with the healthcare of military families. They believe this clause undermines the rights and well-being of transgender children, making it a contentious point in an otherwise vital piece of legislation.

On the other hand, supporters of the bill argue that the overall benefits, including improved living conditions for military families and enhanced national security, outweigh the controversial aspects. They emphasize the importance of passing the NDAA to ensure the U.S. military remains well-funded and prepared for any challenges.

As the bill heads to the White House for the final approval, all eyes are on President Biden. Will he sign it into law despite the contentious provision, or will there be further negotiations? That remains to be seen.
