The president of Vanuatu, Nikenike Vurobaravu, signed an order to dissolve the Pacific island nation’s parliament on Monday, according to a report by Vanuatu broadcaster VBTC. Vurobaravu and Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai had both been expected to face separate votes of no confidence in the parliament, after motions were instituted by the political opposition.
Vanuatu has experienced a period of political instability for over 18 months, with three prime ministers in that period. This instability has been marked by frequent changes in leadership and ongoing political turmoil. The dissolution of parliament is seen as a significant move to address the ongoing political crisis and make the way for new elections.
The political opposition has been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the current administration, leading to the recent motions of no confidence.
