The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, the umbrella body of university lecturers, has expressed optimism that the next administration after the February polls would believe in Nigeria’s education as the catalyst for the country’s growth.
While urging Nigerians to vote for leaders who value education, the academic union remarked that the only way the strikes could be forestalled in the education sector was by electing leaders who believed in and supported the education of its youths.
The National President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, made the plea while speaking in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, stating that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration did not believe in the education of its youth.
In Osodeke’s words: “I hope after the general election, we will have someone who believes in education as the catalyst for the growth of the country because the current government doesn’t believe in it. The motivation for development for any government is an investment towards education, particularly tertiary education.”
