The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Lagos Command, has confirmed that singer Burna Boy and social media personality VeryDarkMan recently visited the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Apapa, Lagos.

According to officials, the visit was not for entertainment or publicity but to gain clarity on how individuals and organisations can legally assist inmates by settling court-imposed fines that qualify them for release.

In a statement released by the command, authorities explained that the duo requested information on the formal procedures guiding such interventions under Nigerian correctional laws.

The spokesperson of the Lagos Command, Osho Onimisi Joseph, disclosed that Burna Boy and VeryDarkMan were received by the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge of the facility, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Sanni Richard.

He explained that the visitors were taken through the approved process, including eligibility checks, documentation requirements, and internal verification steps put in place to prevent abuse of the system.

Joseph stressed that releases are strictly regulated and cannot happen without due process.

“No inmate can be released without thorough verification, proper documentation, and official authorisation in accordance with existing laws,” he stated.

He also assured Nigerians that inmates under the care of the Service are housed in conditions that meet both national and international standards.

According to him, the Nigerian Correctional Service operates in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, as well as global guidelines such as the United Nations’ Nelson Mandela Rules, which emphasise dignity, safety, and humane treatment.

The command further noted that the welfare, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates remain central to its mandate.

While commending citizens who show interest in lawful initiatives that support justice delivery and prison decongestion, the Service encouraged continued cooperation that aligns with legal and institutional frameworks.
