Back in the 90s, being a kid was all about fun and freedom. Kids played outside, chasing friends, climbing trees for fruit, or spinning tires for laughs. There were endless options, and they could switch activities anytime.

But nowadays, things are different. Kids have the same routines after school, mostly revolving around screens and snacks. Spending too much time in front of screens and eating without thinking can really affect a child’s health and body shape. This article aims to find out why kids today are getting overweight.

Main Factors Contributing to Childhood Obesity

Diet and Eating Habits

When we talk about diet and eating habits, it all comes down to how kids eat without really paying attention. Nowadays, with all the gadgets like tablets and TVs, they can easily snack mindlessly. They could be watching Coco Melon and chewing on a box of cookies, and they’d clearly need a drink to wash it all down while waiting for dinner.

Now, you might be wondering, why is this such a big deal? Well, when they eat without thinking, they just keep going. They don’t realize when they’re full or when to stop. Plus, it’s not just about snacks; it’s also about how much snacks they eat before a meal and how much actual healthy meals they eat during mealtime. They might need that food to grow, but if they’re not burning off those calories with enough playtime outside, it adds up and becomes excess fat. This brings us to the next contributing factor.

Physical activities

Technology is great but it also has its downsides, especially in the case of childhood obesity. Trying to keep kids entertained can be exhausting, whether you’re a parent or a babysitter. The noise from one child is one thing, but multiply that by two or four, and it’s enough to drain anyone. So, what do you think is a solution at that moment? Turning on the TV or handing them their tablets for some quiet time seems like a lifesaver, right? Electronic devices become little helpers, giving you a moment of peace in the chaos. But is that really the way to go?

“Children who don’t exercise much are more likely to gain weight because they don’t burn as many calories,” Mayo Clinic states. Exercise in the context doesn’t necessarily mean lifting weights and punching bags. Rather it means any form of physical activity that would cause the child to sweat. It’s a given that they add weight because of all the sedentary activities they do which involves lounging around with very little physical activity indulgence.

Family and environment

Sometimes, if someone in the family is overweight, the child might be more likely to become overweight too. It’s like a family trait, but not everyone gets it. And let’s talk about parents’ role in all this. As a parent, if you’re always grabbing burgers and fries for a quick meal, your kid is going to want that too. I mean, why can’t they have what Mom and Dad are having, right? So, you give in and give them the unhealthy stuff, leaving them wanting more when hunger strikes again. It turns into a cycle that’s hard to break – from one treat to a routine of burgers and fries for every meal.

Lastly, money and where a person lives can contribute as well. If you live in a place where it’s hard to find good, healthy foods, or if your family doesn’t have much money, it can be tough to eat well.

Additional factors

When children don’t get enough sleep, their bodies produce more ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and less leptin (the satiety hormone), leading to increased appetite and potential overeating. Some medications, like steroids, can have side effects that increase appetite or promote weight gain. Last on the list is hormonal imbalances, although less common, can also play a role. For example, hypothyroidism can slow metabolism and contribute to weight gain.

Conclusion

Childhood obesity is serious, and we all need to act. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or policymaker, it’s time to make changes. Let’s choose healthier foods, encourage outdoor play, and demand safer communities for kids.
