Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has opened up about her feelings on being widely regarded as the “Queen of Afrobeats.”
In a recent chat with Apple Music’s Ebro, the singer admitted that while she values the acknowledgment, she finds the label somewhat uneasy to embrace.
Savage explained that the weight of such a title comes with responsibility, adding that many other women in the industry equally deserve accolades.
Highlighting her pioneering role as one of the first Nigerian female artists to achieve international success, she said this might be the reason the crown was placed on her.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” Savage stated.
She further noted, “Personally, I don’t like that tag, it’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble, and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it. I didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted.”
