Since the local government elections in Rivers State, there has been increasing contention for power, with the political landscape becoming more intense. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to his opponents ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike, a dominant figure in Rivers politics, warned that any attempts to manipulate election results, as allegedly seen during the local government polls, would not be tolerated during the general elections.

Wike’s Opposition to Local Government Election Results

Wike strongly opposed the results of the local government elections and cautioned his political rivals not to repeat such actions in the 2027 elections. He criticized the electoral process, stating that those responsible for electoral malpractice should not expect the same outcome in future elections. “Do you think we will allow you to carry the results sheet to the government house and then announce it without scores? [Who] would allow you in general elections? It is not going to be possible,” Wike declared.

The Power Struggle Between Wike and Fubara

The local government election has further deepened the rivalry between Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The competition between these two political heavyweights appears to transcend party lines, with Wike indicating that the next election will not be about political parties but about individual influence and control in the state.

Outlook for the 2027 General Elections

As the political atmosphere in Rivers State heats up, it is clear that the 2027 general elections will be highly competitive, not just between political parties but between powerful figures like Wike and Fubara. Unless Governor Fubara can shift the political dynamics in Rivers State, the struggle for dominance is expected to intensify as the general elections approach.
