This music video “Kese (Dance)” directed by Wizkid himself was released on March 6 2025 and has shown his artistic talent in mixing vibrant images with cultural symbolism.
There have been mixed reactions on his choice of directing the music video himself. While some celebrate his willingness to take creative control, others—including industry critics and fans—believe the execution didn’t do the song justice. Watching the video, one thing is clear: while Wizkid might be a musical genius, directing is an entirely different ball game.
A Visual Celebration of Dance and Culture
The video rotates through three different settings:
• Theater Stage: Ladies were seen intricate with their costumes dancing in highly complex choreography with high spirits under the dim lightings showing their dedication toward this form of art.
• House Party: A celebration of art with everyone dancing to the music, capturing the very essence people coming together in a setting to showcase their dance skills.
• Art Gallery: A juxtaposition of Wizkid alongside fashionably clothed Black models and classical artworks hints at celebrating the beauty and cultural significance of Black heritage.
The Video: Simple or Just Lazy?
“Kese” uses a lot of minimalism with far fewer dance and fashion-themed visuals, and its art gallery visual-art is itself an appealing feature as well. However, this stripped-down approach has left many wondering if it was intentional or just lazy. The video lacks vitality and fails to fascinate viewers, according to Regha, who claims that Wizkid’s attempt to experiment with a fresh creative direction failed.
Daniel Regha said: “Wizkid did a poor job in directing the Kese (Dance) video; He’s trying to tap into a different creative direction but the video doesn’t really match the energy of the song, nor is it captivating enough. Truth be told that looks more like a simple Performance video. For one, the dancers needed a better choreography, or should’ve at least perfected the dance steps during rehearsal process cos they weren’t in sync. That said, the video’s simplicity is commendable. No offense.”
He might have a point. For a song that is meant to make people dance, the video doesn’t give enough movement, excitement, or memorable moments.
Fans React: Love It or Hate It?
Social media has been divided. Wizkid FC, as expected, sees no wrong in his work. To them, the video is a statement of elegance and simplicity. Others, however, feel that Wizkid directing his own video was a misstep. Many fans believe he should have worked with a more experienced director—someone who could have taken the visuals to another level rather than giving us what looks like a fashion shoot with occasional dance moves.
My Take: Wizkid Needs to Focus on His Strengths
Let’s be real—directing isn’t for everyone. Directing requires much different abilities and skills, Wizkid is an exceptional musician. That explains why he has had the chance to work with great directors such as Meji Alabi, TG Omori, and Daps in the past. These directors understand what it takes to translate his music into a visual experience. Kese deserved more. If this was meant to be a dance video, where was the high-energy choreography? Where was the storyline? The video feels more like a “vibe” than a fully thought-out concept.
Should Wizkid Keep Directing?
Wizkid is a superstar, and he has every right to experiment with new creative roles. After seeing Kese, it is clear that directing is not his line at the moment. If he is really interested in doing more in this area, he should buckle up and learn the art, work with capable professionals, and then express his vision. Otherwise, he should better stick to where he shines: making great music.
What do you think? Was Kese a hit or a miss?
