Olaide Adekunle was detained by men from the Ogun State Police Command after she allegedly sold her 18-month-old daughter to an unnamed bidder for N600,000.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, the command’s spokeswoman, said that the 33-year-old woman was detained as a result of a report made by her husband, Nureni Rasaq, at the Sango divisional headquarters.
According to Rasaq, his wife traveled to Lagos with their daughter on March 15 before returning without her.
He claimed that despite his wife’s best attempts, he was unable to learn what had happened to their baby.
Following the report, the DPO of the Sango Division, CSP Dahiru Saleh, instructed his investigators to track down the woman, who was eventually taken into custody.
During questioning, the suspect admitted that she had sold the kid for N600,000 to a person in Lagos.
She explained that she had borrowed money from a microfinance bank and that when she was unable to repay it, the bank’s agents began threatening to deal with her harshly.
As a result of this, she fled to Lagos and began selling sachet water.
She first met a man while hawking, and he then introduced her to the woman who ended up purchasing the child in Lagos, according to the police spokeswoman.
Additionally, DCP Babakura Muhammed, the state’s acting commissioner of police, has ordered that the suspect be handed over to the State Criminal inquiry Department (SCID) for additional inquiry.
