Zinedine Zidane admitted he turned down coaching job offers over the last five years for fear of taking a post other than France head coach. Zidane was presented with the national team manager’s position by the French Football Federation on Monday following Didier Deschamps’ stepping down.
The former World Cup-winning midfielder held a press conference earlier this week in which he shared that he had rejected proposals to manage multiple clubs throughout Europe in the wait for his turn with his home nation.
“In the last four or five years, I had offers to join clubs, and I rejected them all for the France national team.
This is the only job I wanted after my time at Real Madrid,” Zidane said at the press conference held on Monday. “The 54-year-old said that coaching the nation was the natural move in his career and he knew that he had to make the choice whenDeschamps’ contract with FFF wasn’t going to be renewed.
FFF President Philippe Diallo remembered one of his first meetings with the legendary coach during a previous press conference held earlier Monday, saying Zidane looked Deschamps straight in the eyes and said: “I know how to win.”
The Former French National Team captain led the Real Madrid club to remarkable success, having won 3 Uefa Champions League titles in a row to go along with two Spanish league titles.
