Despite the fact that the 2023 General elections is 14 months away, political activities have begun in earnest. The duo of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC National Leader, and Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice-President, have yet to express interest in running for President in the All Progressives Congress (APC), but their respective loyalists are actively organizing Nigerians to support them.
Tinubu’s contribution to Osinbajo’s political success is no longer a secret. Furthermore, the former has greater clout than the latter. Tinubu has demonstrated that he is a pragmatic politician who can lead from the front. In the Southwest, his succession plan worked, and the area is now the least atomistic in the country.
However, if both men decide to run for President in 2023, two major factors that may give Osinbajo an advantage over Jagaban Borgu are listed below.
The Northern Elites have endorsed Osinbajo: Apart from his cordial connection with the White House, Osinbajo recently made a courtesy visit to Alhaji Dr. Umar Faruk Umar, the Emir of Daura, who hailed him (Osinbajo) as his favorite person.
Similarly, General Ibrahim Babangida, a former Head of State, has backed Osinbajo as his favored candidate for the 2023 Presidential Election. As a result, Osinbajo will be backed by the Northern Elites.
APC Governors’ Support: Governors are key partners in any political party. They play a crucial part in the selection of a presidential candidate. The Progressive Consolidation Group (PCG), a pro-Osinbajo group, recently paid a visit to Nasarawa State, where Governor Abdullahi Sule hailed Osinbajo as a man who can build on President Muhammadu Buhari’s accomplishments.
He also said that if Osinbajo decides to run for President, the APC Governors will support him.
