Xabi Alonso accepts Chelsea must improve defensively after they’ve shipped nine goals in their first four league games of the season.
While their attack has scored more than two goals per game on average, the Blues have still managed to pick up seven points thanks to their goal-scoring prowess.
They have conceded over two goals per game, prompting Alonso to advise that Chelsea cannot just “attack better”.
“In general, I think that we are attacking better than defending in any area. We know that it is a big subject and a big theme for us,” he said. “It’s not only about defending in one area. We concede from every department: open play, set pieces, long balls.

For sure, it is only four games but the tendency in terms of conceding, I don’t like it and we need to do much better,” Alonso told the club’s website.
The Chelsea boss called on his players to stay concentrated after the opposition got the upper hand, focusing on the importance of playing with discipline and intensity as a team to minimise risks of conceding.
“All the teams in the Premier League can hurt you, so you need to be very aware, very ready that the danger can come from any situation,” added the Chelsea boss.
Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are providing Chelsea with scoring power, so it is a question of finding a better balance for the future.
