A total of $2.92 million in full scholarships have been awarded to 33 exceptionally talented Nigerian students to attend American universities and colleges in the 2024–2025 academic year.
This accomplishment was made possible by the Opportunity Funds Program of the US Consulate General in Lagos, which aims to provide highly qualified international students with limited financial resources with increased access to U.S. higher education institutions.
The program covers the upfront costs associated with attending a US university.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Lagos in honour of the students who were accepted to top U.S. colleges to pursue studies in a variety of fields, Consul General Will Stevens congratulated the scholars on their acceptance.
He advised them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by American colleges and to become active members of the numerous organisations and groups that will improve their experience as overseas students.
“This year, you will join the more than 17,000 Nigerian students studying in the United States.
“You have successfully survived the arduous college and university admissions process in the United States, and we are very excited for your future.You have excelled in Nigeria, and I am confident that you will continue on that path of academic greatness,” Consul General Stevens addressed the departing students
One of the scholars, Chigozie Paul Odo, was awarded full scholarship for a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of South Carolina. His PhD study will focus on immunotherapy, with the goal of adding to long-term cancer treatments.
Odo, who lost his father and the lone provider for his family during his second year of university, thanked the US government for covering the initial fees of applying to US universities through the Opportunity Funds Program.
“My dream of studying in the United States which seemed impossible is now a reality,” he stated further.
The 33 departing students 10 undergraduates and 23 graduate students will study biomedical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, earth and planetary sciences, organic and medicinal chemistry, civil, construction, and environmental engineering, among others.
The successful students were awarded financial aid after a highly stringent selection procedure.
This aid paid for costs associated with the college application process, including application fees, standardised exam costs, U.S. visa and SEVIS fees, and air travel to the United States.
Through regularly scheduled meetings, seminars, and bootcamps, EducationUSA counsellors worked closely with the students to support them during the application process
The Opportunity Funds Program, which is in its twentieth year, emphasises the value of educational exchange as well as the beneficial effects it has on promoting understanding between the two countries and fortifying their bonds.
