A long time has gone by since she shared a video of her symptoms, which include a lot of pus drainage from her armpit and even between her butt cheeks. In a previous article about hidradenitis suppurativa, we discussed a 26-year-old HS patient named Mott who has been battling the condition for more than ten years.
Dealing with HS is difficult, and I feel sorry for Mott because I know she wouldn’t want to have to deal with her symptoms every day. Even when I wake up, I don’t want to deal with the articles and other content I need to write in a day. I can only imagine the amount of mental stress she would experience. The everyday misery of draining tunnels is only one aspect of the burden she must bear.
What’s Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
Let’s take a few steps back and briefly talk about hidradenitis suppurativa. It is a long-term skin condition that causes boil-like abscesses to form under the skin.
These abscesses often show up in areas like the armpits, groin, understand the breast, or around the buttocks. Because HS is a long-term condition, it tends to recur during flare-ups, which causes the bumps to break open, and leak fluid or pus with an awful smell.
The exact cause, however, isn’t clear, but it happens when hair follicles get blocked and inflamed. This triggers the immune system to react, which causes swelling and pain. HS has a bunch of symptoms, like painful boils under the skin, redness where the bumps appear, tunnels under the skin that connect to the lumps, scarring after the bumps heal, and pus drainage. Regardless of how the condition may look, HS is not contagious, but it can seriously affect how the patient lives their daily life.
Mott’s Story
The HS patient, Mort, who goes by Imani Furtrell, or Mani, first noticed her skin condition at the age of 11. She was confused and cried as she couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her. Throughout her childhood, she battled with skin aging and also got bullied at some point. In high school, she finally got diagnosed with Hidradenitis Suppurativa HS. At that moment, her dermatologist explained that there was no cure for HS, which typically affected her, putting her in a dark place in her life.
Living with this condition came with her feeling self-conscious and stressed in public because she was always on alert for flare-ups. As the years go by, Mott has become more knowledgeable about managing her condition and discovering what products work best for her skin. In July of 2023, she had surgery to remove some of the damaged tissues and skin caused by HS.
Mott’s Dating Life
Mott shared a tough story about her dating with hidradenitis suppurativa and how much it has affected her emotionally. She talked about going on a date with someone she had liked for two years. The date went well, and she felt really comfortable with him. They texted for a few days after, but then he stopped replying. She felt confused and hurt because she thought they both liked each other.
Mott said she usually likes to tell people about her HS within the first few dates if she feels comfortable, but she didn’t get the chance with this guy because he ghosted her. This wasn’t the first time something like this happened, and it made her feel really down and question if she’s doing something wrong. She said she’s tired of dating and sometimes wonders if she’ll ever find love.
Fast forward to a pretty recent video posted on November 24th, 2024, and Mott was in tears. She said she’s been crying for hours because thinking about her love life has made her feel really sad. She doesn’t want love to feel this painful, but she can’t help how she feels. Mott’s upset because she has to act like everything is fine at work when it’s not. She tried to cheer herself up by taking pictures and being positive, but it just wasn’t working. She’s frustrated and doesn’t like feeling this way.
Mott’s Lifestyle Challenges
In one of Mott’s flare-up updates, she shared her struggle with a painful flare-up between her butt cheeks. The pain was intense, almost a 9 out of 10, and sitting was impossible. She got a steroid injection that helped for a bit, but the flare-up started draining and became tender again. Mott said she has to keep the area clean and covered to avoid infections, which makes even daily things, like going to the bathroom, really painful. She uses creams and washes the area carefully but has to be super gentle to avoid further damage.
Bottom Line
Mott has been dealing with a tough skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) for over 10 years. It causes painful lumps and sores in places like her armpits and butt, which can drain pus and leave scars. She’s learned to manage it with special creams, careful cleaning, and even surgery, but it’s still really hard to live with. Mott’s story shows how hard it is to live with a chronic illness, both physically and emotionally, but she keeps pushing through, even on the hardest days.
