A festive Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, had in a blink of eye, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy. On a night meant for joy and celebration, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, who had been living in Germany for almost two decades, drove his rented black BMW into a crowd, killing five people and injuring more than 200 people.

The suspect, identified as Taleb Al, was arrested at the scene and while the authorities are still trying to figure out his motives, his history of anti-Islam rhetoric has raised many questions.

Eye witnesses had described the horrifying moment when the car sped through the market, with people screaming and running for safety to news reporters. Emergency services had respond immediately upon being informed but the damage was already done.

The attack has created anxiety and horror among the community and several residents were reported to have returned to the market to lay flowers and light candles in memory of the victims.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who visited the site to express his condolences and stand in solidarity with the people of Magdeburg had said; “This senseless act of violence has deeply affected us all,” he said. “We must come together in these difficult times and support one another.”

This unfortunate incident days before Christmas has not only marred the holiday season but also sparked debates over security and migration in Germany.

A lot of residents have calling for increased security measures at public events, while others had said there was a need for unity and understanding in light of such tragedies.

While an investigation is ongoing, vigils and memorials are being held, and kind-hearted people have come together to support the victims and their families.
