In the dazzling world of Nigerian entertainment, everything seems glitzy and glamorous on the surface, red carpets, chart-topping hits, and blockbuster movies. But behind the glitter lies a much darker reality, where the industry’s biggest stars are no different from sharks circling in the water, each ready to devour the other. From ruthless rivalries to shocking betrayals, the Nigerian entertainment scene is not just about talent, it’s about survival. And as Tiwa Savage recently pointed out, the real danger isn’t the sharks in the ocean, but the ones lurking within the very industry she calls home.

Tiwa Savage vs. The Industry’s Sharks

Recently, Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage made headlines after posting a video of herself swimming with sharks. While the fans panicked about her swimming next to real sharks, Savage had a different message to share. In a follow-up post, she revealed, “The real danger lies within the Nigerian music industry.” This statement hit harder than anyone expected, as it hinted at the cutthroat nature of the industry she’s been navigating for years. While the sharks in the ocean might seem intimidating, it’s the ones in the music industry that can really harm you.

Savage wasn’t just playing with words. She’d already made headlines earlier in 2024 after alleging threats from fellow artist Davido. In January 2024, Tiwa filed a petition accusing Davido of harassment after a controversial Instagram post. The drama escalated further when her ex-husband, TeeBillz, vowed to “teach Davido a lesson.”

Music Industry Rivalries: Who’s Really in Control?

Tiwa’s comments are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to rivalries in Nigerian music. From the ongoing battles between Davido and Wizkid to the competition between Davido and Burna Boy, it’s clear that the industry is full of big egos and big tensions. But it’s not just about who’s the best artist. The Nigerian music industry is also about power, control, and influence. Artists often find themselves clashing over who gets the bigger share of the spotlight, the bigger stage, or the bigger endorsement deals. For those looking to rise to the top, it can feel like a game of survival, with anyone willing to sabotage the next person in line.

Nollywood: The Movie Industry’s Dark Side

Nollywood, Nigeria’s thriving film industry, isn’t any different. On the outside, Nollywood is booming, with movies hitting cinemas and gaining international attention. But underneath, the industry is filled with just as much toxic competition as the music world. In December 2024, filmmakers engaged in a new form of rivalry, bribing cinema distributors to push their films over others. This unethical practice forced moviegoers to pick sides and watch certain films, while other great movies were pushed aside. It’s not just a few filmmakers who are guilty, the industry as a whole seems to turn a blind eye to these shady tactics.

Filmmakers in Nollywood know that the race to get their movies seen is incredibly fierce. It’s not just about making great films, it’s about who can play the game the best. Unfortunately, for some, this means using underhanded tactics to get ahead, whether it’s through bribery, manipulation, or public smear campaigns.

Why Toxicity Thrives in the Industry

Why do these entertainers, whether in music or film, engage in such toxic behavior? The answer is simple, the industry rewards success above all else.

As long as the industry continues to flourish, people will overlook the shady dealings and toxic competition that happen behind closed doors. After all, the spotlight shines brightest on the winners, not the losers, and everyone is trying to claim their piece of the fame pie, no matter who they have to step on to get it.

In this world, success is everything, and the sharks are always circling, waiting for their next meal.
