Renowned Nigerian writer, novelist, and broadcaster, Mabel Segun, has passed away at the age of 95. Her family confirmed her death in a statement released late Thursday, announcing that the literary icon, diplomat, and sports enthusiast died in the early hours of the day.

Mabel Segun was more than just a writer; she was a trailblazer in Nigerian literature, broadcasting, and sports. Her legacy spans decades of remarkable contributions to Nigerian storytelling, education, and cultural development. She was a recipient of numerous awards, recognizing her impact in literature and the arts.

Mabel Segun Passes Away at 95, Leaves Behind a Legacy

Born on February 18, 1930, Segun was one of the earliest Nigerian women to gain prominence in English literature. She attended the University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan) and graduated in 1953 with a degree in English Literature, Latin, and History. Her dedication to education and creativity paved the way for future generations of Nigerian writers.

Family Mourns Mabel Segun, Funeral Plans to Be Announced

Her family expressed gratitude for a life well spent, stating, “It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in literature, broadcasting, and sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (née Aig-Imoukhuede).”

While the funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, tributes have started pouring in from literary communities, scholars, and admirers of Mabel Segun’s works. Her death marks the end of an era for Nigerian literature, but her influence will live on through her works and the countless lives she touched.
