The Kano State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, cleared the air on the ongoing emirship tussle. Dederi clarified that the recent Court of Appeal ruling does not invalidate the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. Dederi insisted that the landmark verdict delivered on January 10, 2025, remains firmly in place unless the Supreme Court rules otherwise.

A Fierce Legal Showdown

The emirship dispute has been a legal tug-of-war, with power and tradition colliding in the courts. Earlier this year, the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Mohammad Mustapha, overturned a Federal High Court judgment that had nullified the Kano State Government’s decision to reinstate Sanusi II. That ruling essentially reaffirmed the state’s authority in the matter, handing a significant victory to Sanusi’s supporters.

However, Alhaji Aminu Baba Dan Agundi, a key ally of dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, was not ready to concede defeat. He promptly escalated the battle to the Supreme Court and filed a motion for a stay of execution, a legal maneuver aimed at keeping the status quo until the highest court delivers a final judgment.

What the Appeal Court Actually Ruled

On March 14, 2025, the Court of Appeal granted Dan Agundi’s application, ruling that the current state of affairs must remain unchanged until the Supreme Court weighs in. But what does this really mean?

According to Dederi, the answer is simple: the ruling does not undo the appellate court’s January 10 decision. It merely ensures that no further action is taken while the Supreme Court prepares to hear the case.

“The Court of Appeal cannot reverse its own decision. That power belongs only to the Supreme Court,” Dederi stated emphatically. He assured Kano residents that Sanusi II’s reinstatement stands unless the apex court decides otherwise.

A Case That Could Reshape Kano’s Royal Politics

The stakes couldn’t be higher. This legal battle isn’t just about who wears the royal turban—it’s a test of power, law, and political influence. With the case now sitting before the Supreme Court, all eyes are on Nigeria’s highest judicial authority to deliver a final, irreversible verdict.

What Happens Next?

For now, the emirship crisis remains in a delicate balance. Sanusi II stays in place, but the future of Kano’s royal leadership depends on what unfolds at the Supreme Court. Will the ruling favor Sanusi, solidifying his return to the throne? Or will it overturn the appeal court’s verdict, paving the way for Aminu Ado Bayero’s return?
