Having recently turned 37, Luka Modric has been linked with a move to the MLS, but he is keen on extending his contract at Real Madrid by yet another season, which will take his total time spent at the Santiago Bernabeu to 14 years.

Despite being 39, the Croatian is still one of the key players in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, having played in 45 games this season in all competitions. His experience has been crucial, particularly with injuries forcing Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni into ad hoc defensive positions.

His contract is set to expire this summer, and there has been rampant speculation that he could leave. Real Madrid is Modric’s only priority as per a report of Fabrizio Romano that Modric’s appearance in this team is not finished.

Keeping Modric on would be a sound bet considering questions over the longer-term prospects of Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga. While there is no impending sale, Madrid may look to maximize something on one of their young midfielders.

Adding to the woes posed by the defensive crisis at Madrid had seen Eder Militao, David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez struggle with injuries. Valverde has done a job at right-back and Tchouameni has played as centre-back regularly. In such a turbulent season, Modric’s leadership is invaluable.

Madrid is still competing for both La Liga and the Champions League. If successful, Modric would win his 30th trophy with the club, including a record-breaking six Champions League trophies.
