A wave of violent protests targeting KFC outlets across Pakistan has left one employee dead and dozens arrested, as anger over the Gaza war spills onto the streets of major cities.

Police confirmed 45-year-old Asif Nawaz, a kitchen worker at a KFC in Sheikhupura near Lahore, was fatally shot during clashes on April 14.

Authorities have made 40 arrests but say the shooter remains at large in what may have been an accidental discharge during chaotic demonstrations.

Social Media Videos Show Mobs Attacking KFC Stores With Iron Rods

At least 11 incidents have been reported in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, with viral footage showing protesters threatening to burn down KFC locations, smashing restaurant property with metal rods, and even setting two Karachi outlets ablaze.

One widely shared clip captures a protester shouting, “They’re buying bullets with your money,” reflecting widespread belief that the US-based chain funds Israeli military actions.

Influential Sunni scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani and Islamist party TLP have urged peaceful economic resistance, distancing themselves from the attacks.

“Boycott Israeli-linked products, but never harm others,” Usmani declared at the National Palestine Conference, echoing TLP’s denial of organizing the KFC protests despite their anti-Israel stance.

Sheikhupura police revealed the bullet that killed Nawaz traveled 100 feet before striking his shoulder and entering his chest.

While no evidence suggests he was deliberately targeted, Nawaz’s death has led to the probe of protest tactics. In the meantime, authorities continue reviewing CCTV footage from multiple attack sites as they try to arrest additional suspects and make headway into the case.
