Dangote Group has expressed grief over the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija season 7 winner Phyna, who was critically injured in a road accident involving one of its trucks in Auchi, Edo State.
In a statement shared on Sunday via X, the company extended condolences to Ruth’s family. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Otabor, who was injured in the recent road incident involving one of our trucks in Auchi, Edo State. On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” it read.
While Dangote noted that it had covered medical costs and offered support, the tragedy raises serious questions about why such accidents continue to happen under the company’s watch. Reports suggest that many of its trucks are driven by unlicensed or poorly trained drivers, putting lives at risk on Nigerian roads.
Is it because Aliko Dangote is Africa’s richest man that corners are being cut? Wealth and influence should not excuse negligence. Millions are spent on corporate growth, yet basic road safety measures, proper driver vetting, and accountability remain lacking. Until serious reforms are enforced, incidents like this will keep recurring.

Ruth Otabor reportedly passed away at around 6:30 a.m., following the amputation of her leg due to injuries from the accident. Condolences are important, but what is truly needed is accountability. No amount of wealth should make anyone immune to ensuring the safety of the people on Nigerian roads.
