Chelsea put in a great effort to secure a 1-1 draw against league leaders Arsenal, despite playing more than 50 minutes with 10 players at Stamford Bridge. The draw stretched Arsenal’s streak to 17 games across all tournaments, yet it seemed like a triumph in spirit for the determined Blues.
From the start of the derby, the fierce competition was clear as both sides were energized by midweek victories in Europe. Arsenal posed the danger via Bukayo Saka, yet Robert Sánchez was quick to block his effort. Chelsea then began to assert themselves, with Enzo Fernández taking a long-range shot at David Raya. The match took a shift in the 38th minute when Moisés Caicedo was shown a straight red for a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino, marking Chelsea’s sixth sending-off this season.
In spite of the obstacle, Chelsea remained resolute until the break, with Sánchez making a save to deny Gabriel Martinelli. Shortly after the second half began, the Blues shocked Arsenal as Trevoh Chalobah nodded in a Reece James corner, putting the home team ahead and extending Chelsea’s run of scoring in their previous eight league matches.
Arsenal, on the other hand, reacted quickly. Merino drove in a Saka cross to equalise the match 11 minutes afterwards. The Gunners pressed for a winning goal. Chelsea held firm defensively, but a late threat through Viktor Gyökeres nearly turned the tide for the Gunners.
Chelsea have now failed to beat Arsenal in their last 8 league meetings with Arsenal, yet this draw keeps them six points behind the Gunners heading into December.
