Before he ever stepped in front of a microphone, John Udomboso, famously known as Young John, had already left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s music scene. As a producer, he was instrumental in shaping the sound of the past decade, delivering hits that became cultural milestones. From Olamide’s catchy “Bobo” to Lil Kesh’s “Efejoku,” and Kizz Daniel’s heartfelt “Mama” to Naira Marley’s chart-topping “Mafo,” his beats combined crisp energy with a unique flair. His mastery in the studio earned him the nickname “wicked producer,” a title that reflected his skill and creative influence behind the scenes.

Making Waves With YBNL

Young John’s career flourished during his time with the YBNL collective, where he became a familiar name to music lovers nationwide. Industry recognition followed, with The NET ranking him third among Nigeria’s top music producers. His work earned nominations for Producer of the Year at both the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and The Headies, solidifying his status as one of the country’s premier beatmakers.

Stepping Into the Spotlight

By 2022, Young John was ready to redefine himself. He transitioned from the studio to the stage, stepping into the role of a recording artist. That year proved pivotal. His single “Dada” quickly gained viral traction, eventually drawing a remix featuring superstar Davido. The collaboration elevated Young John’s profile, marking his arrival as a performer in his own right.

Hits That Define a New Era

Following the success of “Dada,” Young John kept up the momentum with a series of successful releases. Songs like “Xtra Cool” and “If You Leave” showcased his ability to blend infectious rhythms with heartfelt lyrics. He concluded 2022 with the release of his EP Love Is Not Enough, a project that highlighted his growth as an artist and his capacity to create songs that resonate emotionally and commercially.

Jiggy Forever: A Lifestyle in Sound

In 2024, Young John released his debut album, Jiggy Forever, a project that firmly established him as a solo artist. The album featured collaborations with top-tier Nigerian talent, including Kizz Daniel, Seyi Vibez, Don Jazzy, and Zlatan. Speaking to Apple Music about the project, he said, “Jiggy is a lifestyle that simply means staying fly and trying to stay above the waters regardless of what’s going on in your life. It’s just vibes that carry the energy and emotions I felt at different times, in different places, and different moments.” The album captured his vision of music as both a personal expression and a shared experience with his audience.

Rising Higher With Blue Disco

The following year, Young John released his sophomore album, Blue Disco, further cementing his place in the Afrobeats scene. Featuring collaborations with Wizkid, Asake, Rema, and DJ Tunez, the project underscored his versatility and commitment to creating music that balances energy and emotion.

A Sound Shaped by Early Influences

Reflecting on his artistic journey, Young John acknowledges the influence of his upbringing. Growing up in a church environment, he developed an innate understanding of rhythm and melody, which continues to inform his production style. He explained, “I’ve always leaned toward emotional depth in my production. I let the rhythm settle into me before building my melodies on top.” This approach has allowed him to evolve as an artist while retaining the signature sound that first made him a household name.

A Career in Constant Motion

From producing hits for Nigeria’s biggest stars to becoming a chart-topping artist himself, Young John’s career trajectory demonstrates both talent and vision. Today, he stands as a multifaceted figure in Afrobeats, proving that a producer’s touch can transform into a performer’s voice, shaping the genre while staying true to his roots.
