Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, has triggered widespread reactions after drawing comparisons between the sacrifices of African heroes and those of Jesus Christ.

In a video statement, the singer praised African figures for their courage and resistance against oppression, arguing that their sacrifices carry deeper weight than those celebrated in Christianity.

He referenced prominent African leaders such as Patrice Lumumba and Thomas Sankara, alongside his father and other icons, insisting they died knowing they would not return.

How Seun Kuti’s Remarks On African Heroes And Jesus Ignited Debate

“The sacrifice of Lumumba is greater to me than the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ knew he was going to wake up after three days, but the people that died for me; Lumumba, Sankara, my father, Nkrumah, Steve Biko, these people died knowing they would never wake up, and they still died. They’ve dehumanized us for so long they believe we are all animals. We need to prove to them that we are humans. From today, no matter what they come with, stand your ground!,” he said.

His comments have since sparked heated discussions online, with many reacting strongly to his comparison and the broader message on sacrifice and resistance.
