Rutter’s late goal denies Tottenham as relegation fears grow

Tottenham Hotspur have been hit with another troubling blow in their ongoing struggle to avoid relegation in the Premier League as Brighton & Hove Albion managed to equalize through Georginio Rutter’s last-minute goal, making it 2-2.

Spurs, now without a victory in their last 15 league matches, found it difficult to get a grip on the game initially, and it was Brighton who came closest to scoring first when Jack Hinshelwood managed to keep the ball after a set-piece, and as a result, Micky van de Ven made a near own goal.

Taking just a few seconds to react, the host scored a goal for the first time shortly before the end of the first half. Xavi Simons delivered a beautifully lofted pass behind the defence for Pedro Porro, who, with a header, allowed the ball to slip past Bart Verbruggen.

The Seagulls came back strongly after the break, with Kaoru Mitoma expertly volleying his shot into the top corner.

Spurs took the lead again when Simons made a move and, with a powerful shot in a split second, he hit the post, and that was the end of the game as far as the hosts were concerned.

Nonetheless, errors at the back have cost them dearly, once again. In the 95th minute, Rutter scored a great finish after poor marking to score a late equalizer, and Tottenham remains in the relegation zone with only five matches left.
