Former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah has slammed the comparisons between Kylian Mbappe and Spain wonderkid Lamine Yamal, asserting that the France captain is “far superior” to the teenager.
Weah’s comments came following a second-half performance by Mbappe, which saw him score a brace during France’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Sweden in the World Cup round of 32 tie in MetLife Stadium. Real Madrid star’s dazzling tournament continues with the goals taking his World Cup total to six as Les Bleus advanced to the next round.
Talking to Spanish programme ‘El Chiringuito’, the Liberia footballing icon admitted Mbappe is something special and advised fans not to bring 18-year-old Barcelona ace Yamal into the conversation.

“Mbappe is a phenomenon,” the World Cup legend stated. “He is a truly great player and a great goal scorer. Lamine Yamal is still a young kid who’s developing and growing. It doesn’t make sense for him to be compared to Mbappe because everybody knows that Mbappe is far superior.”
Mbappe is enjoying a blistering tournament and is on course for a battle with Lionel Messi for the World Cup Golden Boot award, with 18 career World Cup goals to his name – moving close to the all-time record for the competition.
The argument between the two talents has been ignited in recent weeks, with France and Spain set to meet in a potential semi-final. If they were to meet, then Yamal would get the chance to put himself against one of the world’s finest footballers once more.
