FIFA has brought a new tradition to Sunday’s World Cup final and will hand out winner’s rings to the victor of Argentina and Spain’s showpiece event at MetLife Stadium.
Following in the footsteps of major American sporting leagues such as the NFL’s Super Bowl, FIFA will produce 30 rings for the winners to receive before the contest and a further 1,996 to go to supporters, featuring tiny replicas of the World Cup trophy.
Donald Trump to be in attendance
The United States President will be in attendance at the final in New York, where he will give away the trophy following the clash. This is despite the fact that his country is hosting the competition; he is yet to attend a game of the 102 already played, including his own country’s 2-1 defeat to Belgium in the last 16.

This comes amid speculation over reports he contacted Gianni Infantino to overturn Folarin Balogun’s ban. The striker would have been automatically banned, but it was overturned despite criticism. It made little difference, however, as the USA went on to lose to Belgium 4-1.
There are weather warnings over poor air quality from Canadian wildfires in New York, but organisers do not anticipate that it will affect Sunday’s game, with Argentina and Spain going for the title and the historic achievement of becoming the first recipients of the World Cup-winning ring.
