The U.S. State Department has released its August 2026 Visa Bulletin, introducing some of the biggest advances this year for family-sponsored green card applicants, while employment-based categories recorded only limited movement.
The monthly bulletin determines when foreign nationals can proceed with different stages of the U.S. permanent residency process by updating priority dates for immigrant visas.
Under the latest update, applicants in several family-sponsored categories will benefit from faster processing as more visa numbers become available.
Family-Based Categories Record Biggest Gains
The most significant progress was recorded in the F2A category, which covers spouses and unmarried children of lawful permanent residents.
For most countries, the final action date advanced to July 22, 2026, marking the largest movement in this month’s bulletin.
Other family-sponsored categories, including F1, F2B and F4, also moved forward, potentially allowing more applicants to qualify for green cards sooner than expected.
Employment Visas See Limited Progress
By contrast, employment-based immigration categories experienced only modest improvements.
The EB-1 China, EB-3, and EB-4 categories recorded slight advances, while EB-2 for India remained unavailable because the country’s annual visa allocation has already been exhausted.
Similarly, EB-5 unreserved visas also remained unavailable for Indian applicants.
The State Department cautioned that increasing demand could cause some employment-based categories to become unavailable or even move backwards before the current fiscal year ends on September 30.
It also warned that the EB-1 category for Indian applicants could soon become unavailable if visa demand continues at its current pace.
Understanding The Visa Bulletin
The Visa Bulletin uses two timelines to guide applicants through the green card process.
Final Action Dates indicate when the U.S. government can approve and issue a green card. Applicants whose priority dates fall before the published cut-off date are eligible to receive permanent residency.
Meanwhile, Dates for Filing determine when applicants may submit the required documents and begin processing their cases, even if a visa number has not yet become available.
In simple terms, the filing date allows applicants to enter the processing queue, while the final action date determines when they reach the front of the line and can receive a green card.
Family Applicants Benefit As Backlogs Persist
The August bulletin continues the State Department’s effort to maximise the use of available immigrant visas before the close of the 2026 fiscal year.
While family-sponsored applicants emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of the latest update, employment-based applicants—particularly those from India—continue to face lengthy backlogs.
However, the department noted that most EB-5 set-aside visa categories remain current worldwide, allowing eligible investors to continue their applications without waiting for priority dates to become current.
