The New Mexico Data Privacy Suit against tech giant Meta reached a conclusion in a Santa Fe courtroom; a state jury found Facebook liable for deceiving users about its privacy protections and failing to safeguard personal information. The two-week trial focused heavily on the long-standing Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal, where a third-party personality quiz harvested data from roughly 87 million user profiles globally without explicit permission. Jurors ruled that Facebook’s deceptive privacy statements impacted all 2 million residents in New Mexico, finding the company liable for over 43 million total violations of consumer protection laws.

Key Evidence and Arguments Presented in Court

Throughout the trial, state prosecutors argued that Meta actively misled the public regarding how third-party app developers harvested and shared personal details. Evidence brought forward showed that internal checks flagged thousands of suspicious apps, yet Facebook failed to inform affected users or force developers to erase collected records. Defense attorneys representing Meta claimed that the state’s evidence was outdated and argued that platform safeguards have improved significantly over the past five years. A spokesperson for Meta expressed strong disagreement with the verdict, asserting that the company will continue to defend its record while emphasizing its First Amendment rights to manage its digital platforms.

Facing Massive Penalties and Legal Precedents

With liability established, the judge must now determine the final financial payout for the Meta Privacy Lawsuit. State attorneys are pursuing maximum statutory penalties of up to $5,000 per violation under state consumer protection statutes, which could expose Meta to billions of dollars in fines. New Mexico stood as the only jurisdiction to bring this specific privacy breach to trial after choosing not to participate in earlier settlement agreements signed by other states. This decision marks another major courtroom loss for Meta in the state, coming shortly after New Mexico secured $942 million in judgments regarding safety protections for minors.

Opinion

This courtroom decision marks is a change in how tech companies handle user data. For years, technology platforms have treated data collection practices as minor infractions that can easily be swept away with quick cash settlements. By standing alone and pushing this case all the way to a jury trial, New Mexico proved that state regulators can successfully hold global tech giants accountable for historical privacy failures.

When companies collect personal details without clear consent, it harms public trust. A platform’s claim that its internal safety tools have improved over time does not erase the fact that user information was shared and exploited in the past. Allowing social media networks to harvest personal details without meaningful consequences creates an environment where personal boundaries simply do not exist.
Moving forward, this ruling sends a direct message to every major technology company. True accountability requires more than corporate promises and cosmetic privacy updates. As judges determine the final financial penalties, this case will serve as an important legal model for future legislation, proving that protecting personal information is a fundamental right that cannot be compromised for corporate profit.
