Southwest Airlines is clarifying recent reports about changes to its extra-seat policy, after updating the policy in late May.

The airline previously allowed customers who needed additional space to either purchase an extra seat in advance and request a refund, or ask for a complimentary extra seat at the airport if one was available.

In January 2026, the airline updated its policy to require customers needing an extra seat to purchase one before traveling.
