The summer transfer window closed after another extraordinary spending spree by Premier League clubs, amassing a total figure of $4.75bn (3.5bn), with Manchester City at the forefront.
The Citizens ended the window as the club with the highest expenditure in what can only be described as the summer of English spending in history, completing the British-record joint deal for Enzo Fernandez from rivals Chelsea on the deadline day with a staggering $168.8m (125m) price tag on the midfielder who was at the center of all summer transfer rumors around him.
City, who also completed the $87.7m (65m) deal for Iliman Ndiaye, brought in Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, the highest spenders reaching an overwhelming $609.1m (458m).
Chelsea come in at the second spot with $470.7m (349m) and a top bid for Aston Villa’s talisman Morgan Rogers for a whopping $159.6m, with Tottenham Hotspur in third place at $423.9m (302m), which also makes the top 5, which includes Newcastle United and Aston Villa in 4th and 5th place respectively.
Liverpool spent $306.2m (198m), which propelled them to 6th after the arrival of Bradley Barcola from PSG on the deadline day of the transfer. A spending spree by Arsenal made them 7th as they spent $262.8m (194m), with Bruno Guimarães their largest arrival at the Emirates Stadium with a deal worth $93.7m (69.7m).
Spending by Manchester United reached $200.4m (148m), whereas Everton shelled out $118.8m (88m) and the late Deadline Day swoop for Ndiaye only to see him later join City as all forms of speculation were shut to bed.
Going the opposite direction, however, it was a fairly calm summer for Sunderland, who became the lowest-spending club with a bid as low as $88.7m (65.7m) despite signing their Deadline Day arrival Malick Fofana from Lyon.
The spending spree has proved to be a very successful summer transfer window, with an increase of $688m (500m) from the summer spending last season of $4.1bn (3.1bn).
