Nigeria Football Federation technical director Augustine Eguavoen has been announced as an interim head coach for the Super Falcons as the team is to go next month to the 2028 Olympic Games qualification matches against Comoros.
Eguavoen is expected to take over from Justin Madugu, who resigned alongside his entire technical crew after his nation failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup competition.
The 61-year-old will handle the senior women’s national team for the first time; his previous records at coaching international engagements were mainly with the Super Eagles on numerous occasions.
Eguavoen is tasked with facing two matches in a fixture against Comoros at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne Remo, on the 9th and 13, respectively, as it marks the second-round fixture for the women at the Olympic qualifiers.
As part of the high-seeded teams to automatically earn a bye into the second round, where it will contest with Comoros, who had a remarkable 30-0 aggregate win over Sudan, Eguavoen will take charge of his first female national team at any level.
The former Super Eagles boss will be assisted by Nasarawa Amazons coach Christopher Danjuma, who is known to be in the Nigeria women’s team framework. Olatunji Baruwa, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach, is expected to serve the team as the goalkeeper trainer, while former Super Falcons central defender Ayisat Yusuf will be in the team of assistance.
While revealing that Eguavoen’s appointment is temporary, as a new permanent handler will eventually be appointed, the NFF claims that four rounds will be played before any African team can play in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with Africa providing only two representatives.
