Meta has banned advertisements from TikTok and its parent company ByteDance across its platforms in the United States and six other countries, escalating the rivalry between the two social media giants.

The ban took effect immediately on Thursday in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. It also covers third-party advertisers running campaigns that link to TikTok and other ByteDance properties in those markets.

“We don’t have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps,” Meta spokesperson Christopher Sgro said in a statement. “Declining promotional services to a competitor is a normal business practice across industries. We will continue to compete on product quality and user experience” .

TikTok and ByteDance did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Competitive Context

The move marks a significant escalation in the long-running rivalry between Meta and ByteDance. TikTok has emerged as one of Meta’s most formidable competitors for user engagement, creators, and advertising dollars.

Meta Bans TikTok Ads Across US, Canada, and Five Other Markets

By shutting off access to Facebook and Instagram’s massive ad infrastructure, Meta is cutting off a key channel TikTok has historically used for user acquisition in major global markets . TikTok operates in the US as a majority American-owned joint venture, with ByteDance retaining a 19.9% stake. The platform has more than 200 million users in the country.

TikTok had already made its own moves against rival platforms. Last month, the company removed dedicated Instagram links from user profiles, making it harder for users to migrate to competing social platforms.

The Teen Safety Dispute

The advertising ban comes amid broader tension over child safety measures on social media. In August, Meta agreed to a settlement worth up to $18 billion with US states over claims related to social media harms to children. Under the agreement, Meta committed to introducing daily usage limits and nighttime restrictions for minors on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta has since urged TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar safeguards, including through an advertising campaign. TikTok reportedly declined to share the ads on its platform, with Axios reporting that TikTok said the ads broke its rules on political content .

In September, TikTok reached a settlement with Alabama requiring usage limits and stronger age-verification measures for users in the state. The platform still faces other cases, including a New York lawsuit over teen safety.

The Bottom Line

Meta has banned TikTok and ByteDance ads across seven countries, including the US and Canada. The company says it will not run ads for a competitor trying to pull users off its apps. The move escalates the rivalry between the two platforms and comes amid a public dispute over teen safety measures. TikTok, which has more than 200 million US users, did not immediately respond.

My Opinion

Meta says declining ads from a competitor is “normal business practice.” That is true, but Meta owns Facebook and Instagram. TikTok is the only platform that has genuinely threatened its dominance over the past decade. And now Meta is using its advertising infrastructure — a business TikTok relies on for user acquisition — to squeeze its rival.

There is a word for this: anticompetitive. Meta can call it “normal business practice” all it wants, but the effect is the same. It is blocking a competitor’s access to a key channel for growth. Regulators should be asking whether that crosses the line.

The teen safety dispute makes the timing even more interesting. Meta publicly urged TikTok and YouTube to adopt its child safety standards. TikTok reportedly declined to run the ads. Then Meta banned TikTok ads entirely. Coincidence? Maybe. But it looks like retaliation.

Meta is not a small company fighting for survival. It is one of the most powerful corporations on earth. When it uses that power to block a rival, it should be scrutinized — not excused as routine business.
