The Federal Government of Nigeria had yesterday, given its opinion on the protesting members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, saying that those who had blocked the Lagos-Ibadan expressway had violated the nation’s law.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, made this statement while briefing State House correspondents at the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting overseen by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the minister, the constitution, as amended, recognized and protects the citizens’ right to public protests but it does not empower any Nigerian to cause pain and inconvenience to other people. This statement was coming after the protest had caused massive gridlock on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, leaving motorists and passengers stranded and frustrated.
The protest had taken place just after the Sagamu interchange section of the expressway, towards Lagos State.
