Senator Kabir Gaya, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission -INEC, had on Thursday, said that the National Assembly had plans to pass the bill on the establishment of the Electoral Offences Commission before the upcoming 2023 general elections.

Gaya, in a Channels Television’s program, Politics Today, said the Senate had forwarded its version of the bill to the House of Representatives, and it was pending the House’s agreement on it.

The bill, when passed, will seek to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission, and the Electoral Offences Tribunal to provide a legal framework for the investigation and prosecution of all electoral offenses in the country.

This move is aimed at improving the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. Already, the bill had been passed for a second reading by the House of Representatives on July 1.
