Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, has just been given US immunity from a lawsuit filed by the fiancée of the murdered journalist, Jamal Khashoggi.
Khashoggi had been a prominent Saudi critic and had been murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2018.
The US intelligence had during that time, believed that it was Prince Salman that had ordered the killing. But, in recent court filings, the US State Department had found that the Saudi Arabia Crown Prince had immunity due to his new role as the Saudi Prime Minister.
Khashoggi’s ex-fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, has been quoted as saying on Twitter that “Jamal died again today” after the immunity was announced.
Ms. Cengiz, together with the human rights group known as Democracy for the Arab World Now, DAWN, which had been founded by the late Khashoggi, had been seeking damages (unspecified) in the US, from the Crown Prince for her fiancée’s murder.
Cengiz had accused Prince Salman and his fellow government officials of having “abducted, bound, drugged, tortured and assassinated the then US-resident journalist and democracy advocate Jamal Khashoggi.”
