President Ramphosa Arrives Russia, to Bridge the Gap between the Two Warring Countries

The war between Ukraine and Russia has been waged too long, as both parties are refusing to see reasons why the war should end, leading to a lot of economic losses. African leaders have President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa arrived in Saint Petersburg, Russia, aiming to bridge the divide between the warring nations and put an end to the protracted conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The war has inflicted significant economic losses, and African leaders have taken it upon themselves to intervene and facilitate peace talks.

President Ramaphosa’s visit follows productive discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as stated by the South African presidency. The African delegation, including Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal, Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, and Azali Assoumani of Comoros, who also serves as the current African Union head, is determined to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their objective is to find a pathway to peace that will bring an end to the devastating 16-month-long conflict, which has caused immense economic hardship, loss of life, and global instability.

Unfortunately, the leaders of Uganda, Egypt, and Congo-Brazzaville had to withdraw from the visit at the last moment and sent representatives in their place. Analysts have expressed concerns that the pursuit of peace is becoming increasingly precarious, as both Kyiv and Moscow remain convinced of their potential for victory on the battlefield.

Ramaphosa emphasized the need for de-escalation on both sides during a press conference in Kyiv the previous day, advocating for a peaceful resolution through negotiations. However, Zelensky dismissed the possibility of negotiations while the occupier remained on Ukrainian soil, stating that it would only perpetuate pain and suffering.

The world eagerly awaits the outcome of the African delegates’ efforts, hoping that they can bridge the gap between the two countries, restore peace, and fulfill the expectations of all involved parties.
