At a holiday weekend block party, two individuals were killed, and 28 others sustained injuries during a mass shooting in Baltimore, Maryland. According to local authorities and media reports, the shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victims identified so far include an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, while three others remain in critical condition. The suspect or suspects involved in the shooting are still at large, prompting an ongoing investigation by the police.

Expressing their determination for justice, Mayor Brandon Scott and the police department issued a joint statement, emphasizing their commitment to holding those responsible accountable.

The tragedy has deeply affected the city as it coincides with the start of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, a time when Americans typically come together for festivities such as parades, barbecues, and fireworks. The shooting took place shortly after midnight at the “Brooklyn Day” block party in Baltimore’s Brooklyn Homes neighborhood, which drew hundreds of attendees, as reported by local media.

A witness recounted hearing approximately 20 to 30 gunshots during the incident, adding to the terrifying nature of the event. Images shared by a local reporter on Twitter showed the crime scene strewn with police tape, cups, and other debris.

Emergency services transported nine individuals from the scene to local hospitals, while 20 others affected by the incident sought medical attention at nearby healthcare facilities, according to police statements.

Medstar Harbor Hospital’s emergency department played a crucial role in treating the wounded, having received 19 patients with gunshot-related injuries. As of Sunday morning, all but one patient had been discharged from the hospital, as confirmed by MedStar Health Baltimore in an email update.
