The West African regional group ECOWAS is prepared to take military action in Niger if diplomatic attempts to reverse the recent coup fail. A high-ranking official addressed army leaders at a meeting in Ghana, discussing plans for a standby force.

Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, criticized the coup leaders for evading dialogue with envoys and seeking justifications for their actions. He emphasized the readiness of West African military and civilian forces, citing previous deployments in countries like Gambia and Liberia.
If push comes to shove we are going into Niger with our own contingents and equipment and our own resources to make sure we restore constitutional order. If other democratic partners want to support us they are welcome,” he said.

Musah expressed strong opposition to the junta’s plan to put detained President Mohamed Bazoum on trial for treason, calling it ironic given the circumstances. International entities like the United Nations, European Union, and ECOWAS have raised concerns about Bazoum’s detention conditions.

“The irony of it is that somebody who is in a hostage situation himself…is being charged with treason. When did he commit high treason is everybody’s guess,”

The military leaders behind the Niger coup recently announced their intent to prosecute Bazoum for “high treason and undermining internal and external security.” Bazoum, held since the July 26 coup, underwent a medical examination with no major health issues reported.
